Keepers of the Wild Founder, Jonathan Kraft

Keepers of the Wild Founder, Jonathan Kraft Shares his Thoughts on Cecil the Lion & More! Introduction Jonathan Kraft is the Founder of Keepers of the Wild Animal Sanctuary. I had the privilege of having him on my show back in 2013. I was working with others to help create a second Keepers of the Wild sanctuary in Dolan Springs, Arizona. With the recent killing of Cecil the Lion I asked Jonathan to join us on Up Close and share the current state of conservation – or lack thereof – when it comes to wild cats and big game hunters. Show Summary This interview shares a lot of information about the  possible extinction of many species including; lions, tigers, elephants and others. Jonathan shared new challenges being caused by people keeping exotic animals as pets. He cautioned people to do their research and consider whether – even if legal – they should own an exotic pet. Jonathan Kraft discussed the problem of trophy hunting. The Dentist that killed “Cecil the Lion” paid more than $50,000 to participate in that “trophy hunt”. In fact, it was nothing like a hunt. A carcass was used to lure Cecil away from his sanctuary. He was then shot with and arrow and tracked for 40 miles.  This hunt was led by Bushman Safaris of Zimbabwe and we shared the page I created to shut down Bushman Safaris and other companies that sell big game hunts. There are many simple things we can do to shut down these companies of at least make it more difficult for Trophy Hunters. Keepers of the Wild Links Keepers... read more

India Announces World’s First 100% Solar Powered Airport

On Aug. 18, the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL)—India’s fourth largest airport – revealed the world’s first 100% solar powered airport. The airport already had a 12 mega watt (MW) solar power project producing which can produce 4,000 units of electricity daily. With its newly revealed solar plant, the airport can now produce 60,000 units of electricity every day, far exceeding their daily needs. The new solar power plant has 46,150 solar panels across 45 acres of land near the Airport. That;s the equivalent to 45 football fields! It now supplies the airport with 50,000 to 60,000 units of electricity per day, making the airport “absolutely power neutral”, according to a statement released by CIAL. “Over the next 25 years, this green power project will avoid carbon dioxide emissions from coal fired power plants by more than 3 metric tons, which is equivalent to planting 3 million trees or not driving 750 miles,” From CIAL Statement The New 45 Acre Solar Plant Photo: Cochin International Airport Limited   The new plant is expected to generate 18 million units of solar power annually, that is the same amount it would take to supply approximately 10,000 homes for a year. The solar project is expected to offset carbon emissions by more than 300,000 metric tons over the next 25 years. Cochin International is the busiest and largest airport in the state of Kerala and the third busiest in India. More than 3,750,000 passengers passed through the airport in 2013 and... read more

Shut Down Bushman Safaris Zimbabwe

SHUT DOWN BUSHMAN SAFARIS The killing of Cecil the Lion horrified me. When I first heard I wanted to do something. This page is my attempt to do something and I thank you for caring enough to come see what you can do. Bushman Safaris is the company that led the hunt that killed Cecil the Lion. Cecil was a 13-year-old loved by visitors of the Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, out of which the hunters lured him with a carcass. He wore a collar placed by scientists at the University of Oxford who have been tracking him since 2008. The Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force has already said it was illegal to kill Cecil. The Dentist that killed him, Dr. Palmer, paid more than $50,000 for the hunt. The case is being prosecuted in Zimbabwe and by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. There are things we can do now to put the Bushman Safaris of Zimbabwe out of business and help stop trophy hunting all together. We can make a difference. Please take the actions on this page and share it with others. We can stop the next lion from being killed. To listen to my radio interview the Founder of Keepers of the Wild, Jonathan Kraft discusing trophy hunts and the killing of Cecil – CLICK HERE. Leave a comment (you can use Facebook) with more ideas on how we can stop trophy hunting. I’ add your suggestions to the page. 1) Facebook Go to their Facebook page and report them to Facebook for soliciting illegal hunts. Give them a poor rating. Right Livelihood

“Right Livelihood” is a traditional Buddhist teaching. For laypeople, Buddha’s teaching of right livelihood is meant to make an ethical living with the objective being to, “live a long and dignified life with the wealth obtained through rightful means”. You may think that teaching was a little easier to practice in simple economy of 500 B.C. as at that time it mostly meant avoiding occupations such as butcher, tanner, or soldier – if possible. It also meant to be honest and ethical in business dealings – not to cheat, steal or lie. Basically it meant to make one’s living in an upstanding way. In the much more complicated societies of today, one might ask what “right livelihood” means today? This is an important issue for not just Buddhists but the population at large. As nearly half Americans live in poverty and 1 in 5 children go to bed hungry and 15 million unemployed you might not think is possible, but it is…. “Right Livelihood” means living a life in accordance with your values and being aware of the impacts your actions have on others.  Everything we do can be a spiritual practice including what we do for “work”. Two thousand five hundred years ago the Buddha probably didn’t have our complex society of today in mind when he spoke but he clearly understood what is harm and what is not harm. When a person does not have a job and cannot support his or her family, that is harm – there is no question about it. That is why we must stay vigalant against the causes of poverty, stay informed so we are aware. In... read more
