Bicycling Across America to End Poverty & Help the Homelessness

On August 20th, Bob and Carol Hollowell will embark on a 3,760-mile, cross-country bike ride across America to raise awareness and funds to help “Break the Cycle” of poverty and homelessness in America. They’ll be visiting homeless shelters and visiting with the homeless along the way.

Homeless ShelterCarol Hollowell

Carol is the Executive Director of Switchpoint Community Resource Center that opened in August of last year to help house the homeless and to help them improve their future. Within the three weeks of opening in St. George, Utah Swtichpoint helped 23 people find employment, nine find housing, and five people reunite with their families.

On the show, Carol shares her personal journey to where she is now. She shares how she became inspired one rainy day after passing a man in a wheelchair sitting on the side. She pulled over to find out his story and learned he had been homeless for more than five years because he couldn’t get a state identification card. She spent the remainder of that day helping him get a copy of his Social Security card and other records and helped him get into a local housing facility. She says “That one experience changed me,” adding “If we look outside of our own selves and reach outside of our comfort area and say, ‘What can I do today to make someone else see change?’ then we’ve done our job.”
